EPIC+
: An Amplification of Package Acquisition Best Practices
Abstract:
Processes
for the development and acquisition of enterprise
software are best served when infused with practical
experience.
Pragmatic reflection on what works and what
doesn’t is critical to enable successful adoption of
any process.
One process within the software package
acquisition space is the Evolutionary Process for
Integrating COTS or EPIC.
With deep insights into the origins of this
process from some of the experiences that lead to its
articulation, this paper discuses an amplification of
the EPIC process based on real-world application.
A key contribution from “EPIC+” is the
integration of a diverse spectrum of metaphors and
bodies-of-knowledge.
This process and knowledge integration was tested
through application within a large-scale Mutual
Fund Accounting package acquisition program.
Projects like the aforementioned are faced with
high complexity and large scale, similar to the kinds of
programs that shaped EPIC.
This paper will review some of the origins of
EPIC, identify and explain areas for pragmatic
improvement, especially in the area of the “how-to”.
It will then present the resultant process models that
support a better understanding of “who does what, by
when.”
